Nestled in Belgut, Kericho County, our home course sits at an elevation of around 1,960 m above sea level. This high-altitude environment naturally stimulates athletes’ cardiovascular systems, building endurance and enhancing performance over time, a key reason runners from our region consistently excel.
Smooth, tarmac roads stretch across the undulating hills and valleys, offering runners a fast, reliable surface renowned for cultivating steady pacing and efficient stride rhythm. While regional averages in the county show limited bitumen as a percentage, the key routes in Belgut, especially those connecting to Kabianga University and Sosiot Grounds, are well-paved and athlete-friendly.
The clean, fresh air of the highlands, free from industrial pollution, ensures optimal lung function and recovery, perfect for long-distance training.
The hilly terrain, interspersed with gentle slopes and challenging inclines, offers naturally varied terrain essential for building strength, stamina, and race resilience.
The Kericho County Government actively encourages athletic development, recognizing the value in nurturing local talent through infrastructure, community support, and morale-building initiatives.
Belgut and greater Kericho have become magnets for athletics-related investment from around the globe, Europe, North America, and China; interested in training camps, sponsorship opportunities, and talent development. These investments help sustain training facilities, athlete support systems, and race logistics in the region.
The Belgut Marathon began in 2023 as a 10 km road race designed not only to test endurance, but to empower orphaned and bright students from the two Belgut Starehe secondary schools, with bursary funding drawn from the NG-CDF (Constituency Development Fund)
Hon. Nelson Koech, Belgut Constituency MP, championed the idea and remains a leading proponent. While public records haven’t disclosed a formal “CEO,” the initiative was spearheaded by local leadership in collaboration with NG-CDF structures and community organizers.
The race boasts attractive prize awards (e.g., KSh 100,000 for winners), attracting athletes from Kericho, Nakuru, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and beyond.
By 2024, plans advanced to expand the race into a 21 km half-marathon, a move aimed at scaling up inclusivity and competitive quality.
